Mercer’s unique partnership with ESPN has allowed the Bears to have the first ever school-produced broadcast, along with all games being shown live on ESPN3.


In 2016, Mercer made history by featuring new signees on digital billboards throughout Georgia, as well as Times Square in New York City.

The Bears Story

  • 1892

    Mercer played its first-ever football game against the University of Georgia in January of 1892. It was the first football game played in the state of Georgia, as well as one of the first to be played in the deep south.

  • 1941

    At the height of World War II, a decision was made to disband football following the 1941 season. The Bears played their final game in a 40-13 loss against Chattanooga.

  • 2011

    Mercer announced that it had voted to reinstate football as an NCAA Division I intercollegiate sport beginning with the 2013 season and Bobby Lamb was introduced as Mercer’s 19th head football coach.

  • 2012

    Mercer held their first official practice for the first time in over 70 years when 104 players took the field. Excitement was at an all-time high, with more than 4,000 fans on hand for the inaugural spring game.

  • 2013

    Mercer kicked off its return to the gridiron with a home victory over Reinhardt in front of a sell-out crowd of 12,172. The Bears finished the season with a perfect 8-0 mark at home and set an NCAA record for wins by a first-year program.

  • 2017-

First-Class Facilities

Mercer University broke ground and unveiled plans for its new football complex during a Homecoming weekend ceremony on Nov 11th, 2012.

The Homer and Ruth Drake Field House is one of the top facilities in all of FCS, and houses coaches’ offices, team meeting rooms, a student lounge, gameday suites, and a weight room. It also features a sports medicine clinic that is operated by the Mercer School of Medicine, providing quality care to student-athletes.

The first game in Five Star Stadium took place in 2013 against Reinhardt University. The Bears rallied in the 4th quarter as 12,000 fans witnessed a game-winning field goal with three seconds remaining to give Mercer a 40-37 comeback victory.
